We have had a lot of fun going off on our own to explore these towns and today was no exception. Armed with our city map, we were off. The old town starts about 1.5 miles from the port. We entered thru an old gate with thick walls and a watch tower called Fat Margaret. From there it was like being in a fairy tale. We walked cobblestone streets until our ankles were screaming. The streets were narrow and had much the same features of the town of Wismar. Finally coming to the town square which was very large. The old town hall being the main focus. There we met us with friends from the ship...Nancy and Ross and Linda and Red. We all proceeded up the hills to see the dome church, the Russian Orthodox Church and the old bastion and prison. At the top we had an incredible view of the upper and old town(also known as the working class vs the gentry). They were often at war with each other. We heard a guide say that all the red tile roofs dated back to the 14th century. We gradually made our way down to the square where we had a nice lunch at an outdoor cafe. The people are very friendly and helpful.
After lunch we walked back to the ship. There was another ship parked next to us but we really made it look small. They all waved bye to us as we sailed away. In less than 5 mins. This huge fog rolled in..eerie.
We had dinner with Bob and Karen in the Crown Grill. It was to die for.Yum!
Now we are back in our room for the night. We have to be up at 5 in the morning to be ready to leave by 7 for our 1st of 2 days in St.Petersburg. This is the highlight of the trip although every port has been different and special. The weather today was perfect. Sunny and temp was 69.
It seems surreal when we try to wrap our heads around where we are. I really am sad my phone has acted up.
Happy Birthday Bella.
Love to all...really do miss everyone.
