- Posted using BlogPress from my iPad was one of our favorites. We had arranged a private tour with 6 other couples with Friends of Dave Tours. He met us on the pier with a big smile and his very German assistant Stefan. We first had a tour of Warnemunde (Varnemonday) this a beautiful old world beachside down, known as the Riviera of Germany. No one speaks English here and nothing is written in English. We were so glad we had Dave. Dave moved here after meeting his partner;) 5 years ago. He speaks fluent German. This town was virtually unhurt during the war. Actually, all of our tours were in what was old east Germany. Lovely parks and a very nice long and wide beach with soft sand. A lot of reconstruction and repairs were taking place. After a nice break at an outdoor cafe, we walked to the train station for our trip to Wismar (Vismar).
We changed trains after 20 mins. in Rostock and then continued on to Wismar for another hour. Trains were clean, efficient and fast. The countryside was beautiful with everything in bloom. Their main crop seemed to be Canola.
After leaving the train, we toured the town which has gone unchanged in over 560 years old. This is a Unesco town, so nothing is allowed to be changed. Visited a cathedral even older than the town. Too much info to write here. Very, very interesting.
We then walked over to where our lunch was and of course it was in a 560 year old brewery. It smelled like hops. The food was absolutely delicious. All German. I had the goulash, Denny had a fish dish. Huge portions. Then we visited some older sites and heard some stories related to them. We saw a wedding at the city hall. They don't do church ceremonies...just civil. We were given 45 mins on our own. We found a bench in the city courtyard and enjoyed watching children and parents.
On our return train trip, Dave told us we had walked 6.5 miles. We did not doubt it. LOL Stefan told was what it was like after the wall came down in 1989. Very, very interesting.
The weather was a perfect spring day but windy, warm and sunshiny. Some on the ship went into Berlin but we wanted to experience the small villages. So glad we did.
