May 20, 2013

Today was nice and easy. We got a much needed extra hour's sleep last night and woke up in cloudy, misty rain Helsinki. I don't know if I mentioned the weather in Russia.....78 and sunny. Best weather on the whole trip and totally a surprise.
We ate in the buffet for bkfst this morning and caught the shuttle into Helsinki. Very easy city to walk around in and very pretty. A real surprise. There is a beautiful park that runs down the middle of town. On each side are high end stores and Stockman's, the largest dept. store in Finland. This street leads to Market Square on the harbor where everyday locals sell fresh produce, local fish and handmade gifts. One block north is Senate square which has the government buildings, the University and the towering Lutheran Church whose presence dominates the area.
We visited the church, walked around Market Square and headed back to the ship as it was starting to drizzle.
We returned to do laundry today for packing on Wednesday. We know from experience the laundry room will be chaos on Wednesday. The sun came out and it was warm and so pretty. It was nice sitting on our balcony with a glass of wine for sail away. We are really impressed with Helsinki. We have seen so much our brains are in overdrive. Each port has had it's own character and beauty. It is broad daylight here at 10PM. I don't know how late it stays up as we are asleep;)
Looking forward to Stockholm tomorrow. We are not going to the Vasa museum as we did that in Norway, but are going to the palace and royal armory and then spending time in the old town of Gamla Stan.
Hope everyone is well and haven't had any problems from all the storms.
See you soon :)
