We entered the archipelago this morning around 5 AM. Of course, we missed the first hour ;) it is like taking a river cruise with the fjords, homes built on the islands and by the shore with boat docks. Much like our lakes and rivers. The terrain is small hills but mostly flat. The archipelago is 58 miles long.
After bkfst., we joined a tour today for a ride around the city, a visit to the Royal Palace and the Gamla Stan (Old Town). Stockholm is made up of 14 islands. The name in Swedish means Stock=pilings and Holm = island. In the medieval days Gamla Stan was picked for the city and surrounded by pilings to protect from the enemies...hence the name.
The city is beautiful and with all the water surrounding it, adding to its charms.
The old mixes well with the new. The Palace was very nice but no where near as gaudy and opulent as Catherine's in Russia.
One little tidbit...King Gustav of Sweden and Empress Catherine of Russia were first cousins.
We had to be back at the ship by 1, so it was a very hurried visit. We were glad we saw the archipelago on the way in as the fog was so bad on the way out we couldn't make out anything.
Went to a wine tasting at 3. Tried 5 different types. It was lots of fun. Dinner tonight was formal dress. So, we donned our finest and met Bob and Karen for dinner, went to the production show in the theater and spent a few minutes in the casino before giving up for the day.
On returning to our room, we found information for disembarkation on Thursday. We have mixed emotions, but all good things must come to an end.
Tomorrow is our last sea day. Hope to sleep late.....
We have been saddened by the news of the Oklahoma tragedy....so sad.
Off to Copenhagen:)
